A 52-year-old man has been charged by the Fiji Police Force’s M-Paisa Taskforce Team for allegedly obtaining $100 through deception. The incident reportedly took place on September 8, 2023, when the accused misled the victim into making a payment via M-Paisa to reserve a car.
According to police, the victim discovered a post about car rental services on Facebook and was prompted to pay a deposit. However, upon attempting to reach the driver via phone to confirm the booking, the victim was unsuccessful. Following this, the victim reported the incident to the Consumer Council, which then referred the case to the Criminal Investigation Department of the Fiji Police Force in Suva.
The man is scheduled to appear in the Nasinu Magistrates Court later today.
This case underscores the importance of vigilance when engaging in online transactions, as scams and deceptive practices have become increasingly prevalent. By reporting such incidents, victims contribute to better consumer protection and enforcement of the law, highlighting a collective effort to combat fraud.
