A 52-year-old man is facing charges from the Fiji Police Force’s M-Paisa Taskforce for allegedly committing deception to gain financial advantage. The incident reportedly took place on September 8, 2023, when the accused is said to have fraudulently acquired $100 from a victim using the mobile payment service, M-Paisa.
According to police investigations, the victim discovered a Facebook post advertising car hire services, prompting them to send a deposit to secure a reservation. However, attempts to reach the driver via phone fell flat as there was no response.
Following this, the victim sought assistance from the Consumer Council, which escalated the issue to the Fiji Police Force Criminal Investigation Department in Suva. The accused is anticipated to appear in Nasinu Magistrates Court later today.
This case highlights the importance of being vigilant when engaging in online transactions. Consumers should ensure they verify the legitimacy of offers, especially when conducting business via social media platforms. The responsiveness of both the victim and the authorities underscores a commitment to combating online fraud, reinforcing the community’s trust in protective measures against deceitful practices.
