A 52-year-old man has been apprehended by the Fiji Police Force’s M-Paisa Taskforce Team for allegedly committing fraud to gain financial advantage. The incident reportedly took place on September 8, 2023, when the suspect deceitfully received $100 from a victim via M-Paisa.
Investigations conducted by the police indicate that the victim was browsing Facebook when they discovered a post related to car rentals. Following instructions, the victim sent a deposit to reserve a vehicle. However, when they attempted to reach the driver by phone, their efforts were met with failure.
Concerned about the situation, the victim reported the incident to the Consumer Council, which subsequently directed the case to the Fiji Police Force’s Criminal Investigation Department in Suva.
The accused is anticipated to be presented in the Nasinu Magistrates Court later today.
This incident highlights the importance of vigilance and caution when engaging in online transactions, especially as scammers often exploit social media platforms to deceive unsuspecting individuals. It serves as a reminder for the public to verify the legitimacy of offers and ensure secure payment methods to avoid falling victim to financial scams.
