A 52-year-old man has been taken into custody by the Fiji Police Force M-Paisa Taskforce Team, facing charges of fraud for allegedly obtaining financial benefits through deception.
The incident occurred on September 8, 2023, when the accused is said to have duped the victim out of $100 via the M-Paisa platform. Reports indicate that the victim, while browsing Facebook, found a post related to car hire services. Following the instructions in the post, the victim transferred a deposit to secure a vehicle. However, attempts to reach the driver by phone proved unsuccessful.
The victim’s concerns led to a report being filed with the Consumer Council, which subsequently escalated the issue to the Criminal Investigation Department of the Fiji Police Force in Suva.
The accused is anticipated to appear in the Nasinu Magistrates Court later today.
This case highlights the importance of vigilance when engaging with online services and advertisements. As digital transactions become increasingly common, individuals must verify the legitimacy of such offers to protect themselves from potential fraud.
In a broader sense, this serves as a reminder to the community about the risks associated with online transactions, particularly on social media platforms. With increased awareness and appropriate reporting channels, such incidents can help foster a safer online environment for everyone.
