A 38-year-old man has been apprehended by the Fiji Police Cyber Task Force for allegedly defrauding individuals of over $27,000. Investigations indicate that between August 2021 and November 2024, the accused posted numerous advertisements on Facebook, promoting various building materials for sale using different mobile numbers.
However, after receiving payments from eager buyers, he reportedly failed to deliver any of the goods. This prompted eight victims to file reports at the respective police stations of Totogo, Valelevu, and Nausori. The man now faces 12 charges of Obtaining Financial Advantage by Deception and is scheduled to appear in court at the Suva Magistrates Court today.
In light of these events, it’s important to remain cautious when engaging in online transactions. Victims of such schemes should always verify sellers and consider using secure payment methods to protect themselves from potential fraud. The police’s proactive steps in addressing cybercrime in Fiji underline the importance of online safety.
