A 52-year-old man has been apprehended by the Fiji Police Force M-Paisa Taskforce Team on charges of obtaining financial advantage through deception. This incident reportedly took place on September 8, 2023, when the accused allegedly misappropriated $100 from a victim using the M-Paisa payment system.

The investigation revealed that the victim had encountered a Facebook post regarding car rental services, which directed them to send a deposit to secure a vehicle. After the payment was made, attempts to contact the driver proved unsuccessful, raising suspicions. The victim subsequently reported the incident to the Consumer Council, which escalated the matter to the Criminal Investigation Department of the Fiji Police Force in Suva.

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Nasinu Magistrates Court later today.

This case highlights the importance of vigilance when engaging in financial transactions online, particularly on social media platforms. It serves as a reminder for individuals to thoroughly verify the authenticity of any offers before making payments. As the judicial process continues, it’s crucial for victims of such fraud to come forward and report any suspicious activity, contributing to the fight against online scams. The authorities’ prompt actions in this matter bolster public confidence in their commitment to tackling financial deception.
