A 52-year-old man has been arrested by the Fiji Police Force’s M-Paisa Taskforce for allegedly obtaining financial gain through deceptive means. On September 8, 2023, he is accused of swindling $100 from a victim via the M-Paisa mobile payment service.
The investigation began when the victim encountered a post on Facebook promoting car rentals. Believing the offer to be legitimate, the victim paid a deposit to secure the car. However, subsequent attempts to reach the driver via phone were unsuccessful, raising doubts about the transaction’s authenticity. Following this, the victim sought assistance from the Consumer Council, which subsequently escalated the case to the Fiji Police Force’s Criminal Investigation Department in Suva.
The man is scheduled to appear at the Nasinu Magistrates Court later today.
This incident highlights the importance of vigilance when engaging in online transactions. It serves as a reminder for consumers to thoroughly verify offers and exercise caution, particularly when dealing with unfamiliar individuals or companies on social media. Ensuring awareness around such scams is essential as it can help prevent others from falling victim to similar fraudulent schemes.
