A 52-year-old man has been arrested by the Fiji Police Force’s M-Paisa Taskforce for allegedly obtaining money through deception. The incident reportedly occurred on September 8, 2023, when the suspect is said to have fraudulently acquired $100 from the victim using the M-Paisa platform.
According to police investigations, the victim discovered a car hire advertisement while browsing Facebook. Following instructions from the post, the victim sent a deposit to secure a car reservation. However, attempts to reach the driver via phone failed, prompting the victim to report the incident to the Consumer Council, which subsequently forwarded the case to the Criminal Investigation Department of the Fiji Police Force in Suva.
The accused is scheduled to appear in the Nasinu Magistrates Court later today.
This incident highlights the importance of exercising caution when engaging in online transactions, especially when dealing with advertisements on social media platforms. Consumers are encouraged to verify the legitimacy of offers and vendors to prevent falling victim to scams. There remains hope that measures will be enacted to enhance awareness and protect individuals from financial fraud in the future.
