The Cyber Crime Unit of the Fiji Police Force has arrested a 38-year-old unemployed man from Nadi Back Road, charging him with ten counts of Obtaining Financial Advantage through Deception. The accused is alleged to have fraudulently obtained a total of $11,201.25 from six victims.

Investigations unveiled that between April 2023 and November 2023, the man advertised plyboard and floor timber on social media, falsely using the names of different companies and various mobile numbers. Victims sent deposits to his personal accounts, believing they were purchasing legitimate products, but the items were never delivered.

This case reflects a concerning trend in online fraud in Fiji, emphasizing the increasing risks associated with digital transactions as more consumers turn to social media for purchases. Previous reports noted similar incidents, including a case involving another 38-year-old man who defrauded multiple victims using comparable tactics of deceptive advertising on social platforms.

The accused remains in custody and is expected to appear in the Suva Magistrates Court today. This ongoing investigation serves as a reminder for consumers to exercise caution while engaging in online transactions and to verify the credibility of sellers before sending money.

Law enforcement’s continued efforts to combat these fraudulent practices indicate a proactive stance in safeguarding the community amid the rising tide of cybercrime. As awareness about online scams grows, there is hope that consumers will become more prudent and vigilant, contributing to a safer online marketplace.
