The Assistant Minister for Foreign Affairs, Lenora Qereqeretabua, announced Fiji’s intention to reopen its diplomatic mission in Kuala Lumpur during the country’s 67th National Day and 61st Malaysia Day celebrations. Ms. Qereqeretabua expressed that this move aims to fortify bilateral relations and increase trade opportunities between Fiji and Malaysia.
She stated, “Our High Commission in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, is re-opening soon,” although she did not disclose a specific timeline. She emphasized that Kuala Lumpur will serve as the primary focus for future trade initiatives following the reopening.
In her remarks, she extended congratulations to Malaysia’s government and its citizens for their national day, highlighting the historical ties between the two nations, which date back several decades, particularly with Fiji’s support during Malaysia’s challenging periods.
Ms. Qereqeretabua acknowledged the phrase “Bula Maleya,” mentioned by Malaysia’s High Commissioner in his speech, which emphasizes the strong partnership shared by the two countries. She remarked, “The relationship between us and Malaysia is strong and healthy, and we look forward to learning from Malaysia’s developmental achievements.”
High Commissioner of Malaysia to Fiji, Nor’Azam Mohd Idrus, noted the similarities between Malaysia’s “Malaysia Madani: Jiwa Merdeka” initiative and Fiji’s commitment to unity, patriotism, sustainability, and prosperity. He explained that the Malaysia Madani concept, introduced by Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim, focuses on core values such as sustainability, prosperity, innovation, and compassion.
Mr. Idrus also reflected on the longstanding ties between the nations, which began during the Malayan Emergency in the 1950s when 1,600 Fijians demonstrated bravery. He highlighted that their service laid a solid foundation for enduring ties.
He emphasized Malaysia’s commitment to maintaining strong trade relations, noting its consistent ranking among Fiji’s top ten trading partners. Mr. Idrus expressed pride in the significant contributions of Malaysian companies in Fiji, including Carpenters Group, Spirit of Endeavour, and Shangri-La, and he offered his full support for continued business growth and new ventures in Fiji.
