Don Younger has made history for Fiji by claiming the country’s first gold medal at the School Sport Australia Swimming Championships in Brisbane, where he excelled in the Boys 17-19 50 meters breaststroke, finishing with a remarkable time of 29.32 seconds. The 17-year-old swimmer, representing Marist Brothers High School, is also a member of the Tritons Swimming Club, renowned for producing top athletes, including current national swimmer Samuel Yalimaiwai, who recently broke the national 50 meters breaststroke record at the World Aquatics Championships in Singapore.
Younger’s achievement is a landmark moment for the Fiji National Schools Swimming Association, and it brings immense pride to his school and club. He is not alone in showcasing Fiji’s swimming talent; 13-year-old Grace Khelan also shone at the championships by earning her second bronze medal in the Girls 13 50 meters freestyle. Khelan had previously secured bronze in the 50 meters butterfly several days earlier, marking a strong showing for Fiji’s up-and-coming swimmers.
The 2025 Fiji Schools Swim Team, comprising 62 students aged between 13 and 18, is competing in the five-day event against elite swimmers from various Australian states and territories. As the competition wraps up, the team is hopeful for continued success, building on their impressive performances thus far.
The accomplishments of Younger and Khelan reflect not only their personal journeys but also symbolize the bright future of Fiji’s swimming community. These young athletes are paving the way for future generations, inspiring them to pursue excellence in sports. With continued support and commitment to training, Fiji’s swimmers are poised to achieve even greater heights on both national and international stages. The sense of community and inspiration fostered by these young talents holds promise for the future of Fijian athletics.
