The Land Transport Authority (LTA) has renewed its call for motorists to prioritize road safety after a tragic accident in Toko, Tavua, claimed the life of a 24-year-old man from Vatukoula early yesterday morning. The incident occurred shortly after 1 a.m., when an 18-year-old driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle, leading to it veering off the road. Both the driver and the victim suffered serious injuries and were rushed to Tavua Hospital, where the young man was pronounced dead upon arrival.
LTA Chief Executive Officer Irimaia Rokosawa expressed his condolences to the victim’s family and voiced concerns over the alarming increase in road fatalities linked to reckless driving behaviors. He specifically highlighted that speeding is a significant contributor to accidents, often resulting in the loss of control that leads to such tragic outcomes.
“Speeding remains one of the leading causes of road accidents and fatalities, causing drivers to lose steering control and veering off the road — a concerning pattern evident in many of this year’s fatal crashes,” Mr. Rokosawa stated. He further emphasized that disregard for traffic laws will not be taken lightly, warning that reckless drivers would face strict penalties.
Mr. Rokosawa pointed out that road safety is a collective responsibility and urged all road users to make careful decisions while driving. “We cannot afford to gamble with lives,” he stressed, highlighting that every time a driver exceeds the speed limit or drives under the influence, they are endangering themselves and others.
The LTA has been actively engaged in conducting joint enforcement operations and road safety awareness campaigns in collaboration with the police to address these dangerous behaviors. Mr. Rokosawa’s statements come in light of recent statistics that show an increase in the national road death toll this year, a stark contrast to the previous year’s numbers, signaling the urgent need for heightened public awareness and adherence to safety regulations.
While the road conditions can often be unpredictable, enhanced education and community engagement in road safety are expected to foster better driving conditions and help reduce the incidence of road tragedies. The LTA remains committed to working with law enforcement to promote safe driving practices and ensure the wellbeing of all road users as they navigate the challenges on Fiji’s roads. By taking collective action and embracing responsible behaviors, there is hope for a future where road accidents can be minimized, ensuring safer travel for everyone.
