The Land Transport Authority (LTA) has officially implemented increased traffic fees and penalties for various road offences, effective today, January 23, 2026. This move is part of a broader strategy to enhance road safety and promote adherence to traffic regulations.

According to the LTA, the revised penalties will apply to several offences including speeding, illegal parking or stopping, and failure to stop and weigh, all of which have been identified as significant contributors to road accidents, congestion, and damage to infrastructure.

Under the updated penalty schedule, fines for speeding have been significantly raised. Drivers exceeding the speed limit by less than 15 kilometres per hour will now face a fine of $50, an increase from the previous $25. Those found driving between 15km/h and 29km/h over the limit will be fined $75, up from $40. For drivers exceeding the speed limit by 30km/h or more, fines have increased to $100, compared to the prior fine of $60.

The penalties for illegal parking and stopping have also seen marked increases. The fine for these offences has risen substantially from $20 to $100, reflecting the ongoing issues illegal parking creates regarding traffic flow, pedestrian safety, and emergency service access.

In terms of the penalties for failure to stop and weigh, which is often associated with heavy and commercial vehicles, these have been revised as well. A first offence will now incur a $300 fine, a second offence will lead to a $600 fine, and any subsequent offences will result in a $900 fine. The LTA points out that repeated non-compliance presents serious risks to public safety and road infrastructure.

The LTA has encouraged all road users to become acquainted with the new fines and to adhere to traffic laws consistently. Motorists are advised that these revised penalties are designed not as a means to generate revenue, but as a deterrent against unsafe driving behaviour. This initiative aims to reduce road fatalities and foster better road discipline across Fiji, thereby enhancing safety for everyone on the road.
