The Land Transport Authority (LTA) of Fiji has taken significant steps in enhancing road safety by cancelling and suspending the licenses of five drivers implicated in reckless driving within the Central Division. LTA Chief Executive Officer Irimaia Rokosawa confirmed that these drivers were caught on video dangerously overtaking vehicles on Mead Road in Nabua last month. As a result of their irresponsible behavior, three licenses were cancelled for one year, while the other two were suspended for six months.
Mr. Rokosawa expressed his dismay at the actions depicted in the video, stating, “What we witnessed was extremely irresponsible and completely unacceptable.” He emphasized the LTA’s responsibility as the road safety regulator to ensure that roads are safe for all users. The Chief Executive applauded the public for their vigilance in reporting such reckless behavior, acknowledging that community awareness plays a pivotal role in promoting safer roads.
“This cooperation is crucial in helping us protect lives,” he added further. The LTA intends to continue showcause proceedings for drivers who repeatedly violate safety rules. To enhance monitoring, joint operations with the Fiji Police Force are ongoing, focusing on high-risk behaviors through random checks and vehicle inspections.
“Every time someone chooses to drive recklessly, they endanger not only their own life but also the lives of others,” Mr. Rokosawa warned. He reiterated the importance of responsible driving, urging all to adhere to speed limits, avoid distractions, and respect all road users.
In a continuing effort to combat reckless driving, the LTA has reported that from January to October 2025, a total of 19 licenses were cancelled, and 48 others suspended while thousands of warnings were issued. The current road death toll in Fiji stands at 62, an increase from 46 during the same period last year.
The LTA’s proactive measures not only serve as a response to the growing concerns around traffic violations and road safety but also look towards instilling a culture of accountability among drivers. These initiatives reflect a hopeful commitment to reducing road-related incidents and promoting a safer environment for all Fijians. By fostering responsible road use and community engagement, there is optimism for a decline in accidents and a significant increase in public safety on the roads.
