Fiji is turning to Singapore’s successful waste management system as part of its efforts to address increasing environmental and public health challenges. Maciu Nalumisa, the Minister for Housing and Local Government, emphasized that the visit is aimed at adopting more efficient and sustainable waste management practices.
During the visit, the Fijian delegation is focusing on integrated solid waste management and principles of the circular economy. On their first day, they received a comprehensive overview of Singapore’s waste management framework, which is overseen by the National Environment Agency. This agency is responsible for the collection, treatment, and disposal of waste, implementing strict policies, operational standards, public engagement strategies, and enforcement mechanisms to ensure efficient waste management.
Additionally, the delegation attended industry sessions, including a notable presentation from Singapore start-up Circular Unite. This company demonstrated how digital tools, data analytics, and artificial intelligence can be leveraged to enhance waste management processes.
The insights gained from this visit are expected to play a crucial role in guiding reforms in Fiji, aligning with the nation’s sustainable development goals and fostering a healthier environment for its citizens. By learning from Singapore’s proven strategies, Fiji aims to develop a more sustainable future, paving the way for improved public health and environmental resilience.
