Minister for Local Government Maciu Nalumisa is encouraging individuals intending to run in the upcoming Municipal Elections to prioritize the welfare of the community. This call comes as Fiji gears up for local government elections, set to take place for the first time in over 25 years. Nalumisa emphasizes that the focus should be on serving the people effectively, highlighting the necessity for candidates to genuinely address community needs.
To ensure that the future leaders truly represent their constituents, Nalumisa is urging ratepayers to be vigilant when casting their votes. “For better services to be provided — not only in waste management but also in supporting services such as maintaining clean and beautiful towns and cities, ensuring proper street lighting, and keeping well-maintained surfaces — it’s crucial to elect representatives who will listen to concerns and act on them,” he stated.
While an official date for the Municipal Elections has yet to be confirmed, the Minister assured that they would take place next year. Candidates will have the option to run as independents or receive nominations from registered political parties.
In preparation for these pivotal elections, the Ministry of Local Government, in collaboration with the Fijian Elections Office, is actively promoting civic education across the nation. This effort aims to equip voters with the knowledge necessary to make informed decisions, fostering a more engaged and responsible electorate.
As Fiji approaches this historic moment in its democratic journey, there is a sense of hope and anticipation surrounding the potential for positive change and enhanced community representation in local governance.
