The Fiji Hotel and Tourism Association is advocating for immediate reform of the country’s liquor laws, emphasizing that the current regulations are outdated and do not adequately represent contemporary community standards or the expanding tourism sector. The Association points out that the existing legislation permits certain liquor outlets to operate in proximity to residential neighborhoods with minimal oversight. This has raised concerns regarding public order, particularly for families and local businesses.

In contrast, hotels are subjected to more stringent regulations, facing annual license renewals and higher fees, despite already being among the most closely monitored entities in the industry. The Association is calling on authorities to revise the Liquor Act to promote equitable regulation, enhance enforcement, and create a fair competitive environment for all operators.

This push for reform reflects a broader effort to balance the interests of the tourism sector with community welfare, ultimately aiming to foster a safer and more vibrant environment for residents and visitors alike. Such changes could enhance the overall experience in Fiji, ensuring that its rich hospitality heritage is preserved while adapting to modern demands.
