Fiji Airways has announced a significant milestone with its subsidiary, Fiji Link, as it has secured a 12-year operating lease for a new ATR 72-600 aircraft. This leasing arrangement reflects Fiji Airways’ commitment to modernizing its fleet while managing capital expenditures responsibly.
According to industry sources, a new ATR 72-600 aircraft is valued at approximately $26 million USD (around $F59.22 million). Instead of purchasing the aircraft outright, Fiji Airways opted for an operating lease, allowing the airline to maintain operational efficiency and support its growth strategy.
The aircraft, which has been received directly from ATR in Toulouse, underwent rigorous manufacturing testing and certification before being formally accepted by Fiji Airways. Athil Narayan, chief Fiji Link and Cargo Operations officer, emphasized that this acquisition goes beyond merely renewing the fleet. He stated that each new aircraft enhances domestic and regional connectivity by bringing communities together and fostering opportunities for trade and shared experiences across the islands and throughout the Pacific.
The delivery of the aircraft involved a ferry flight operated by Focus Aero, the contracted ferry service for this operation. As it prepares to enter service, the new ATR is anticipated to significantly improve Fiji Link’s capabilities, offering better fuel efficiency, enhanced performance in island environments, and increased passenger comfort for flights within Fiji and to neighboring Pacific destinations.
Fiji Airways is currently finalizing preparations for the aircraft’s commercial introduction. This involves critical steps such as necessary modifications to meet specific operational and configuration requirements, crew walk-throughs, as well as maintenance checks to ensure compliance with safety and performance standards. The airline looks forward to deploying the new aircraft on key domestic routes that will further support tourism growth and enable seamless inter-island travel, thereby strengthening connections across Fiji.
This advancement positions Fiji Airways and Fiji Link to better serve their customers and communities, creating new opportunities for connectivity and economic growth in the region.
