Fiji celebrated the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty (IDEP) on Friday, reinforcing its dedication to eliminating poverty and inequality. This year, the observance marks the 33rd anniversary since the United Nations designated October 17 as a day to highlight efforts aimed at eradicating poverty in all forms globally.
The event, held in Saolo Village, Wainunu, Bua, was part of the Government Joint Programme and drew together local communities, civil society, and government representatives under the theme #StrengtheningCommunities. Minister for Agriculture and Waterways, Hon. Tomasi Tunabuna, emphasized the importance of community-led development as the foundation for meaningful and sustainable change.
Tunabuna stated, “We can achieve our common goals when we work together with compassion and support for each other.” He reiterated Fiji’s commitment to the Sustainable Development Goal of ‘No Poverty’ and reflected on how government, partners, and communities can collaborate effectively to alleviate hardships faced by families.
Highlighting the complexities of poverty, the Minister pointed out that it extends beyond mere financial constraints, including limited access to healthcare, education, clean water, housing, infrastructure, and markets. The three-day observance saw participation from communities throughout Tikina Vuya, Solevu, Nadi, Wainunu, and Kubulau, who engaged in initiatives designed to empower rural populations.
A significant aspect of the event was the Rights, Empowerment, and Cohesion (REACH) Programme, which delivers essential government services, such as legal, social, and economic assistance, directly to underserved rural and maritime areas. This initiative aims to minimize travel burdens and costs, ensuring that vital services reach those in need.
This year’s IDEP activities coincided with other global observances, including the International Day for Older Persons, International Rural Women’s Day, and Pinktober, reinforcing the interconnected approach needed to tackle poverty, which recognizes the links between health, gender equality, and social inclusivity.
Hon. Tunabuna praised the involvement of the five Tikina of Bua, alongside various government and non-government organizations participating in the event. He acknowledged their commitment to advancing equity and opportunities for all Fijians.
Local participant Laisa Cina from Nagadoa expressed gratitude for the REACH Programme, sharing how it has positively impacted rural communities. “This week is filled with exciting activities from celebrating five marriages to registering our children and learning about financial literacy,” she noted, emphasizing a week of love, growth, and learning that has opened minds in her community.
Cina encouraged youth and women to assume leadership roles in shaping their communities’ futures, stating, “The government has fulfilled its role now it’s our turn to act for the betterment of our families and communities.” The event concluded with a renewed appeal for unity, inclusiveness, and collective responsibility in the continuing battle against poverty.
Through these efforts, Fiji stands committed to fostering resilience and empowerment among its citizens, with the hope that collaborative endeavors will pave the way for a future where poverty is eradicated and every Fijian can thrive.
