The Minister for Health and Medical Services, Hon. Dr. Ratu Atonio Rabici Lalabalavu, underscored the critical role of accessible safe and nutritious food during the Pacific Small Island Developing States (SIDS) Solutions Forum held in Nadi.

Dr. Lalabalavu showcased Fiji’s significant strides in ensuring food safety, referring to the Food Safety Act established in 2003, the subsequent Food Safety Regulations of 2009, and the newly created National Taskforce on Food Safety in 2023. This taskforce is designed to enhance collaboration and improve the enforcement of food standards, empowering consumers to make healthier food choices.

The minister emphasized that these initiatives are vital for enhancing public health and minimizing the incidence of foodborne diseases. He also called upon other Pacific nations to implement similar frameworks to safeguard the health of their populations.

This commitment to food safety highlights the proactive steps being taken by Fiji to not only protect its citizens but also serve as a model for neighboring countries. As nations around the Pacific work towards better public health outcomes, the establishment of robust food safety measures can lead to a healthier, more resilient community.
