Fiji Leads the Way: A Blueprint for Renewable Energy and Climate Action at COP29

The Minister for Public Works, Transport, and Meteorological Services, Ro Filipe Tuisawau, participated in a significant side event at COP29 in Azerbaijan, focusing on “Efficient Water Management and Offshore Renewables – A Green Opportunity for Island Blue Economies.” This gathering brought together influential leaders and experts to discuss the essential need for sustainable solutions tailored for island nations amid the challenges posed by climate change.

During his address, Tuisawau outlined Fiji’s proactive approach to shifting from fossil fuels to renewable energy, noting that currently, 55% of the country’s electricity is generated from renewable sources, predominantly through hydropower. He shared ambitious goals, stating that Fiji aims to surpass 90% of renewable energy usage by 2030 and achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.

Fiji’s National Energy Policy is centered around the principles of sustainability, affordability, and reliability, which he emphasized as vital for enhancing energy security and supporting a clean energy transition that will benefit all Fijians. Among the innovative strategies being explored is the implementation of floating solar systems on hydropower dams, optimizing water conservation while bolstering energy supply.

Tuisawau pointed out that realizing these ambitious goals will require international collaboration. He highlighted Fiji’s leadership in the SIDS Lighthouses Initiative, which has already surpassed renewable energy targets set for 2020 and 2023. He concluded by reaffirming Fiji’s dedication to sustainable development and climate action, stressing the importance of unified efforts to foster resilience not just for island nations but for the global community at large.
