Fiji has reaffirmed its dedication to gender equality and women’s empowerment during its participation in the 69th Commission on the Status of Women (CSW69) held in New York. The Fijian delegation, led by Emily Kamoe-Veiqati from the Ministry of Women, Children, and Social Protection, showcased significant advancements in women’s rights within the nation.

At a High-Level Interactive Dialogue during the conference, Fiji reiterated its commitment to the Beijing Platform for Action, a key global framework aimed at enhancing women’s rights. This reflects Fiji’s alignment with international standards on gender equality.

The Fijian country statement highlighted notable progress in several important areas, including:

– Inclusive education for women and girls
– Enhanced access to healthcare services
– Support for women’s entrepreneurship
– Development of gender-responsive policy and planning

This year’s discussions at CSW69 are particularly vital as they commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration, allowing countries to reflect on achievements and set future goals. Fiji’s active role underscores its commitment to regional and international partnerships in addressing ongoing challenges to gender equality.

Additionally, Fiji’s engagement at the conference included discussions with international partners. A notable meeting with Dr. Maliha Khan, President of Women Deliver, explored Fiji’s potential involvement in the forthcoming Women Deliver 2026 Conference in Melbourne, focusing on leadership in combating gender-based violence and fostering women’s economic empowerment.

It is important to recognize previous remarks from Fiji’s Minister for Women, Lynda Tabuya, acknowledging both progress—like the fact that 57% of tertiary institution graduates are female—and persistent challenges, including ingrained patriarchal norms and the need for effective gender-responsive policies.

Despite these challenges, Fiji’s commitment to initiatives that promote women’s leadership and economic participation offers a hopeful perspective for the future. An upcoming five-year gender equality accountability initiative poised to launch in early 2024 further demonstrates the government’s intention to ensure that advancements lead to tangible improvements for women and girls.

Fiji’s proactive approach at CSW69 not only shows a strong dedication to advancing gender equality but also emphasizes a collaborative effort to build a more equitable society. These initiatives provide promise for empowering women and girls throughout the Pacific region.
