In a significant initiative to enhance Pacific representation in global peacekeeping efforts, a team of ten officers from the Fiji Police Force is scheduled to travel to Brisbane, Australia, for specialized training focused on United Nations deployments. This training course, known as the Pre-SAAT Assessment for Mission Service (AMS), will take place from May 12 to June 13 at the Pinkenba Training Centre alongside 100 candidates from across the region.

This training is facilitated by the Australian Federal Police (AFP) as part of the broader Pacific Policing Initiative (PPI), which aims to create a unified Pacific peacekeeping force and bolster the region’s involvement in international missions. Notably, three Fijian officers — SP Ruci Nasemira, ASP Mohammed Yunus, and A/ASP Rakeshwar Singh — have been appointed as UN-certified trainers for this program, working alongside counterparts from 20 different countries.

During a farewell ceremony for the departing team, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Mesake Waqa emphasized the importance of representing Fiji with pride, highlighting this deployment as a “significant collaborative step” for the Pacific.

This effort corresponds with ongoing discussions previously led by Fiji’s Commissioner of Police, Rusiate Tudravu, at the Pacific Island Chiefs of Policing Executive Leadership Team meeting, where strategies for enhancing regional security and collaborative efforts against transnational crime were outlined. The ongoing commitment to building a strong law enforcement framework is bolstered by Australia’s support for training and development resources.

Such training programs contribute to a hopeful future, fostering greater collaboration among Pacific nations and ensuring a more secure and stable community across the region. The commitment and preparation from the Fiji Police Force indicate a promising pathway for effective policing and a strengthened presence in peacekeeping on the global stage.
