Fiji is set to take part in a significant global ocean meeting in Lisbon, scheduled for February 10, 2026. Minister of Environment and Climate Change, Lynda Tabuya, will represent the nation at the inaugural session of the Ocean Pioneers Coalition, an event hosted by the Oceano Azul Foundation, which also serves as the Coalition’s Secretariat. This meeting will mark Minister Tabuya’s first international engagement since she assumed her current role.

The Ocean Pioneers Coalition aims to unite ministers and experts focused on the protection and sustainable use of the world’s oceans. Minister Tabuya highlighted the objectives of the meeting, emphasizing that discussions will address crucial ocean issues currently facing the global community. These include the implementation of the Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ) Agreement, which seeks to safeguard marine life in international waters, as well as preparations for the first Conference of the Parties under the new ocean treaty, ongoing international talks regarding deep sea mining, and advocating for a precautionary pause on such activities. Furthermore, there will be discussions on ensuring the ocean is effectively incorporated into climate change negotiations leading up to UNFCCC COP31.

As a nation deeply connected to the sea, Fiji brings valuable experience in marine spatial planning, ocean-climate diplomacy, and sustainable fisheries. Minister Tabuya intends to use this platform to advocate for the needs of Small Island Developing States, emphasizing that their livelihoods, food security, and cultural heritage are intricately linked to the health of the ocean.

Fiji’s engagement in this significant meeting reflects its strong leadership on ocean issues globally. “I am proud to ensure that Fiji’s voice and the Pacific family are present at the table as custodians of the blue continent,” said Minister Tabuya, stressing the importance of collaborative efforts to protect the ocean for both present and future generations. This meeting presents a hopeful opportunity for meaningful dialogue and impactful initiatives aimed at safeguarding marine ecosystems worldwide.
