Fiji Leading the Way in Pacific Youth Empowerment

Fiji’s dedication to youth development in the Pacific region was reaffirmed during the South Pacific Youth Senior Government Officials meeting held in Nadi.

Phillip Hereniko, the director of the Ministry of Youth and Sports, emphasized in his keynote address that this year’s theme, “Recommitted to Youth Development in the Pacific,” is significant for the nation as it acknowledges that the future of the region is in the hands of its young population.

He noted that the Ministry of Youth and Sports has consistently led initiatives aimed at youth development, highlighting that their commitment extends beyond mere policies and programs; it is an essential element of the national agenda.

Hereniko outlined recent initiatives by the Ministry, which include revising youth development policies and laws, establishing the National Youth Council of Fiji, and launching The Youth Education Sex App to inform young people about sexual reproductive health services.

He expressed appreciation for the support received from UNFPA and UNICEF, stressing the importance of inclusivity to ensure that no young person is overlooked, irrespective of their background, gender, or location.

Additionally, he pointed out the success of Youth Festivals and symposiums in uniting young Fijians from various backgrounds, allowing them to celebrate their diversity and articulate their aspirations and challenges.

As the Senior Officials Youth Meeting progresses, Hereniko shared Fiji’s ambition to build on existing progress, learn from one another’s experiences, and develop innovative strategies to empower the next generation. He underscored the significance of collaboration, resource sharing, and leveraging the unique strengths of each nation to foster a Pacific region where every young individual can realize their full potential.
