During a gathering at the FMF Gymnasium in Suva to commemorate the birth of Prophet Mohammad, Malaysia’s High Commissioner to Fiji, Nor’ Azam Bin Mohd Idrus, emphasized the peaceful and compassionate teachings of Islam. He noted that the celebration was a call for unity among all who advocate for global peace, stability, and prosperity. Mr. Nor’ Azam highlighted that the Prophet’s life exemplifies community values, kindness, and decency, teachings that transcend religious boundaries and resonate with universal human values.

He urged attendees to reflect on Prophet Mohammad’s virtues, advocating for increased spiritual practices and the incorporation of his teachings into daily life to foster a society characterized by peace and goodwill. The High Commissioner reiterated Malaysia’s commitment to working with Fiji, emphasizing that despite the geographic distance, the two nations share a unified goal of promoting peace and prosperity.

Assistant Minister for Foreign Affairs Lenora Qereqeretabua also addressed the gathering, highlighting Fiji’s rich multicultural tapestry. She stressed the significance of recognizing and respecting diverse traditions within the community, underscoring Fiji’s harmonious celebrations of various cultural festivities such as Diwali and Christmas, alongside this significant Islamic event.

This event follows a recent emphasis by other Fijian leaders, including Deputy Prime Minister Professor Biman Prasad, on the teachings of Prophet Muhammad. They regard these teachings as pivotal to fostering societal harmony and inclusivity across the nation. The historical decision in 1974 to acknowledge Prophet Muhammad’s Birthday and Diwali as public holidays remains a testament to Fiji’s commitment to its multicultural heritage and the contributions of the Indo-Fijian community.

These celebrations serve as a reminder of the power of collective efforts from diverse sectors—governments, civil societies, and communities—that work towards the shared goal of peace and prosperity. By honoring such occasions, Fiji continues to affirm its identity as a nation that values unity in diversity.
