Former Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama and former Police Commissioner Sitiveni Qilihio are currently under investigation for allegedly pressuring the Republic of Fiji Military Forces to deploy troops in response to claimed widespread violence and civil unrest during the tense political climate in December 2022. These allegations arose amidst discussions to establish a new government following the general elections.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Crime, Mesake Waqa, confirmed that the investigation is still active. His comments were made in response to inquiries regarding the status of a case involving alleged sedition against Bainimarama and Qilihio, amid speculation that charges may be forthcoming.
In a revealing interview on The Fiji Times program Lens@177 in September 2024, military commander Major-General Ro Jone Kalouniwai recounted a call from then-Commissioner Qiliho, who urged him to mobilize troops due to perceived instability following the election results. Maj-Gen Kalouniwai stated, “We had a discussion,” and emphasized his choice to keep troops stationed at their barracks instead.
On December 22, 2022, President Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu publicly acknowledged and appreciated Major-General Kalouniwai for his decision to maintain order during the political transition. He praised the military commander for his grounded leadership and for respecting the democratic process that permitted the election of the new government.
This unfolding situation highlights the delicate balance of power and the significant implications of leadership decisions in Fiji’s political landscape, underscoring the importance of civil authority and democratic governance. As the investigation continues, the focus remains on ensuring that the rule of law prevails and that the political tensions of the past do not jeopardize the progress made since the elections.
