Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka and Dr. Sivendra Michael, the Permanent Secretary for Environment and Climate Change, have achieved a significant milestone by being selected for the Distinguished Visiting Fellows Programme at Perry World House, part of the University of Pennsylvania. This prestigious program is recognized for fostering influential global policy discussions.

Prime Minister Rabuka is set to serve as a Distinguished Global Leader from August 2026 until May 2027. Simultaneously, Dr. Michael will hold the title of Distinguished Visiting Fellow for an 18-month period commencing in January 2026. Their appointments make them the first Pacific leadership team to be included in this highly sought-after fellowship, which amplifies Fiji’s presence among key international voices in climate change, security, democracy, and global justice.

Perry World House plays a crucial role in uniting world leaders, scholars, and practitioners to tackle some of the most pressing global challenges today. This year’s cohort also features renowned figures, including former United Nations deputy secretary-general Mark Malloch-Brown and former US principal deputy special envoy for climate Susan Biniaz, emphasizing the caliber of expertise being brought together.

Prime Minister Rabuka noted that their appointments signify Fiji’s enduring commitment to global climate leadership and multilateral collaboration. Professor Michael Horowitz, the Faculty Director of Perry World House, expressed enthusiasm regarding the inclusion of Pacific leaders, which he believes will enhance the discourse on global policy issues.

The Fijian government hailed this achievement as a national milestone, showcasing the country’s credibility and leadership in areas such as climate diplomacy, ocean governance, and sustainable development. With this participation in the program, Fiji not only strengthens its role as a trusted global partner but also positions itself as a prominent Pacific advocate for a resilient and equitable future. This development inspires hope for further collaborative efforts in addressing global challenges, fostering a more sustainable planet.
