The Ministry of Health in Fiji is making significant strides in enhancing the nation’s health landscape by bolstering programs focused on health promotion, disease prevention, and community wellness. At the recent launch of the Fiji Wellness Coalition, Acting Medical Advisor for Health Dr. Luisa Cikamatana emphasized the collaborative mission of the coalition, which integrates efforts from government, academia, civil society, and community members.
Dr. Cikamatana articulated a comprehensive view of wellness that extends beyond the mere absence of illness, advocating for a holistic approach that empowers individuals to make informed health choices and maintain balance in their lives. The Fiji Wellness Coalition aims to provide a platform for dialogue and innovation, paving the way for collaborative initiatives that underscore the importance of health in all societal aspects.
Highlighting the urgent need for community-centered wellness initiatives, Dr. Cikamatana called on all stakeholders to recommit themselves to promoting healthy living, stating the importance of beginning this transformative journey within households and communities.
Complementing the coalition’s goals, a concurrent three-day workshop for heads of departments at the Ministry’s headquarters in Toorak, Suva, is underway. This workshop utilizes the Workload Indicator of Staffing Needs (WISN) methodology to assess staffing requirements across healthcare facilities. The outcome of this training will contribute to the National Strategic Plan for Health Workforce 2025-2034, ensuring that Fiji aligns its workforce capabilities with future healthcare demands.
This progressive approach is vital, particularly as the nation grapples with rising non-communicable diseases (NCDs), which account for a staggering 80% of deaths in Fiji. Government efforts, such as the Wellness campaign and associated community initiatives, resonate with Dr. Devina Nand’s emphasis on preventive care, advocating for measures that prioritize understanding health before illness strikes. These initiatives aim to shift societal norms toward healthier lifestyles and promote community engagement in health literacy.
The government’s commitment to ongoing collaboration with the World Health Organization and other partners reinforces Fiji’s resolve to build a strong, efficient health system. By prioritizing wellness and fostering community participation, Fiji holds the promise of a healthier future, where every citizen has the opportunity to lead a fulfilling and healthy life. This reflects not only a hopeful aspiration for the nation but also a commitment to overcoming the challenges posed by NCDs and enhancing the overall quality of health for all Fijians.
