Fiji’s government has launched a comprehensive maritime investigation into the recent oil spill caused by the Lomaiviti Princess II (LP2) in Suva Harbour. Minister for Transport Ro Filipe Tuisawau confirmed that the investigation will assess the underlying causes of the spill and any operational failures that may have led to it.

The Ministry of Environment will carry out a detailed chemical analysis of the area affected by the spill to evaluate the environmental damage and inform future remediation efforts. This incident has raised significant concerns, as the LP2, owned by Goundar Shipping Ltd, had reportedly been deteriorating since 2019 and was left in a vulnerable state before the spill occurred.

Joeli Cawaki, Chair of the Joint Maritime Environment Committee and CEO of the Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF), stated that the Ministry of Transport will collaborate closely with MSAF to investigate the incident, determine accountability, and identify weaknesses in standard operating procedures. The government has expressed its strong disapproval of the negligence displayed in this situation and reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining maritime integrity, environmental protection, and public accountability.

This proactive government response follows scrutiny of Goundar Shipping Ltd for failing to maintain proper safety and environmental protocols, including not possessing valid waste disposal permits. Efforts are underway to contain the oil spill using booms and dispersants, highlighting a commitment to safeguarding Fiji’s marine ecosystem.

The investigation into the LP2 incident aligns with ongoing concerns regarding maritime safety standards in Fiji, particularly with prior incidents involving similar vessels. The government’s decisive action indicates a hopeful trajectory toward improved safety protocols that can ensure the welfare of passengers and the marine environment in the future. Increasing oversight may pave the way for better regulations and practices in Fiji’s maritime operations, ultimately benefiting both the community and tourists who rely on these vital waterways.
