The Fiji Revenue and Customs Service (FRCS), in cooperation with the Ministry of Finance, has created a Tax Compliance Taskforce aimed at combating tax evasion and avoidance while enhancing tax compliance across Fiji. This initiative seeks to solidify the country’s revenue collection system through effective enforcement and collaboration with various agencies and businesses.
The Taskforce, chaired by Nitin Gandhi, a respected Chartered Accountant and member of the FRCS Board, aims to improve existing tax legislation and processes. Its objectives include reviewing current investigation and prosecution methods related to undisclosed income and financial non-compliance and collaborating with key agencies to tackle financial crimes. The Taskforce will also utilize evidence-based information to bolster investigations, implement protective measures for revenue collection, and uphold strict data privacy and security protocols.
In addition to Gandhi, the Taskforce comprises several experts, including Jitoko Tikolevu, former CEO of the Fiji Revenue and Customs Authority, Rusiate Tudravu, former acting Commissioner of Police, anti-corruption specialist Avaneesh Anand Raman, and financial management expert Pramesh Sharma. Appointed for an initial year, the Taskforce is expected to ensure accurate tax collection through established FRCS processes while working alongside the Commissioner of Tax and other relevant entities, including international partners like Australia and New Zealand.
This initiative holds promise for strengthening Fiji’s financial integrity and fostering greater tax compliance, benefiting both the government and citizens. The formation of the Tax Compliance Taskforce could be a significant step towards creating a fair taxation system in Fiji, effectively deterring tax evasion and ensuring a more equitable financial landscape.
In summary, the Tax Compliance Taskforce represents a proactive approach by the Fijian government to enhance tax compliance, improve revenue collection, and promote economic transparency through collaboration and rigorous enforcement.
