Fiji polices ministry strengthens cyber threat readiness under national framework

The Policing Ministry is lifting its game on cyber threats, focusing on preparedness, response and recovery as it tightens national safeguards for critical infrastructure. Cybersecurity manager Savenaca Siwatibau spoke at the Pacific Fiber Conference and Training in Nadi this week, outlining plans to illuminate security risks and threat issues at the national level.

Siwatibau described a framework where the National Security Council sits at the top as the executive authority for security decisions. He said the ministry hopes to access the council through this framework to stress the importance and critical nature of securing Fiji’s infrastructure.

The ministry has noted that too much emphasis has been placed on building and sustaining infrastructure for business continuity and investment, while the vulnerability to international cyber threats remains underappreciated. To deliver a safer and more resilient infrastructure environment, Fiji needs a robust guideline to protect these investments. The framework centres on four pillars: governance, preparedness, response and recovery. This year, the ministry is prioritising preparedness and response.

This push aligns with wider national efforts to strengthen cybersecurity across Fiji, including ongoing work to formalise a National Cybersecurity Strategy and the establishment of Fiji’s Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT). Fiji has been engaging with international partners to bolster its cyber capabilities and resilience, with moves to enhance collaboration across government agencies and with regional neighbours.

What this means for Fiji
– A more coordinated approach to cyber risk, with direct linkage to top security decision-making bodies.
– Stronger emphasis on preparing for and promptly responding to cyber incidents, helping to protect essential services and data.
– A continued push toward formal national strategies and incident-response structures, supported by international partnerships.
– A clearer pathway for protecting critical infrastructure from both domestic and international cyber threats, benefiting citizens and businesses alike.
