The Ministry of Agriculture in Fiji is advocating for enhanced collaboration with academic institutions to ensure that agricultural research directly influences policy and budget planning. During a mini-symposium in Suva, Minister Tomasi Tunabuna emphasized the need for effective translation of the country’s extensive agricultural research into actionable policies and measurable results.
Tunabuna pointed out the critical structural gap that exists between research efforts and their implementation, which hinders progress. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to the 10-Year National Agriculture Policy, which aims to foster innovation through increased funding for research, the establishment of robust local and international partnerships, and the creation of a national research agenda. Furthermore, he highlighted the importance of closer cooperation between research institutions and extension services.
A significant outcome of the symposium was the formation of a formal Ministry–Research and Academia Forum, which will convene biannually to ensure that academic findings are effectively aligned with governmental priorities. The Minister underscored the importance of evidence-based future agricultural spending, asserting that each dollar allocated must be substantiated by data and aligned with national goals.
This initiative marks a hopeful step toward integrating research with practical policy implementation, aiming to harness the potential of Fiji’s agricultural sector for sustainable development and economic growth.
