A new initiative aimed at enhancing maritime management within local communities has been introduced, following an announcement made by Fiji’s Minister for Fisheries and Forestry, Alitia Bainivalu, at the International Conference on Ocean Governance and Blue Economy Development held in Suva. The program, known as the Training Course for Marine Resources Utilisation, seeks to provide individuals with practical skills pertinent to the sustainable management of marine ecosystems.
Supported by China’s Island Research Centre and the China Ocean Development Foundation, the training underscores the critical need for collaboration and knowledge-sharing among Pacific nations. Minister Bainivalu highlighted the interconnectedness inherent in Pacific cultures, asserting that the ocean serves not only as a resource but as a vital link that sustains communities and embodies their collective identity. She stated, “In the Pacific, we paddle the same canoe. The ocean connects us, sustains us, and defines us. Its protection requires unity and collective action.”
The Minister commended the longstanding partnership between Fiji and China, which spans 170 years, accentuating joint efforts in marine conservation, aquaculture, and coastal monitoring that reflect shared commitments to environmental stewardship. This partnership, along with the support of various organizations, including the Ministry of Natural Resources of China and Fiji National University, seeks to advance ocean sustainability and improve regional collaboration.
The training program is a timely development, aligning with recent initiatives aimed at enhancing Fiji’s capacity for sustainable fisheries management and the preservation of marine resources. It follows the establishment of the $15 million Pacific Centre for Maritime Studies at Fiji National University, which focuses on blending traditional navigation skills with modern technologies, thus preparing future maritime leaders with the knowledge and resources needed for effective ocean governance.
Through continued engagement and training, Fiji aims to build a resilient approach toward managing its valuable marine resources, fostering an environment conducive to cooperation, sustainable practices, and the well-being of local communities. This commitment to education and collaborative efforts reflects a hopeful future for the Pacific region, where shared initiatives bring about positive change for generations to come.
