In a strategic overhaul of Fiji’s approach to combatting narcotics, all current members of the Fiji Police Force’s narcotics division have been instructed to return to their original units. This directive, issued by Minister for Policing Ioane Naivalurua, is part of a broader reform to launch the new Counter Narcotics Bureau, aimed at ensuring the selection of only the most competent and trustworthy individuals in the fight against illicit drugs.

The reform comes in the wake of the arrest of two police officers for alleged involvement in drug-related offenses. This incident has highlighted the dire need for stringent measures to cleanse the ranks of those tasked with leading Fiji’s drug enforcement efforts. Minister Naivalurua emphasized the importance of integrity, ethical conduct, and resilience, stressing that the new bureau will operate independently and become fully operational by the end of the fiscal year.

These reforms are prompted by past concerns over corruption and misconduct within the police force, which have raised questions about its operational effectiveness and integrity. In several recent incidents, officers have been implicated in drug-related activities, underscoring the need for a comprehensive restructure of the bureau.

The newly established Counter Narcotics Bureau will serve as the primary agency in the battle against drug crimes, independently directing its efforts to improve accountability and restore public trust. Naivalurua reiterated the government’s commitment to a zero-tolerance policy towards misconduct, affirming that no officer, regardless of rank, is exempt from the law.

Through these reforms, the government is taking decisive action to address drug-related crimes and restore credibility within the police ranks. The collaboration with international partners, such as the Australian Federal Police, further highlights the commitment to creating a robust and trustworthy law enforcement framework in Fiji.

The transition represents not only an administrative change but also a renewed commitment to safeguarding communities from the destructive impact of drugs. By establishing a credible and competent narcotics unit, the government aims to turn the tide against drug trafficking, leading towards a safer and more secure Fiji.
