Fiji Rugby has announced the debut of Na Soko, a pioneering women’s rugby franchise competition that will commence this Friday at Lawaqa Park. This tournament aims to connect local provincial play with elite professional rugby, particularly supporting the aspirations of the Vodafone Fijiana XV.
Na Soko will feature a semi-professional structure, drawing players from 36 unions split into four regional teams: Camakau, Bilibili, Kaunitoni, and Takia. Alana Thomas, the Women’s High-Performance Manager at Fiji Rugby, shared her enthusiasm for the launch, stating it presents an opportunity for players not affiliated with Fijian Drua to showcase their talent in pursuit of a spot in the Rugby World Cup squad. The tournament is also positioned to assist coaches in developing their skills through the new High-Performance coaching program.
Tournament Director Jikoibau Matawalu emphasized the significance of Na Soko, asserting that it is more than a mere tournament; it represents a vital stepping stone connecting grassroots rugby to the professional level. “We are creating a pathway where local talent can thrive and fulfill their dreams of donning the Fijiana jersey,” he remarked.
The four franchises symbolize Fiji’s diverse maritime heritage and embody movement, unity, and resilience. Each team represents various regions across the country, ensuring a competitive playing landscape, while fostering inclusivity and allowing local talents to emerge.
As Fiji Rugby moves towards strengthening women’s rugby participation, Na Soko serves as a stepping stone in building a deep talent pool ahead of the Rugby World Cup. The sports community is invited to support the launch at Lawaqa Park, showcasing a hopeful future for women’s rugby in Fiji rooted in development and equity.
This launch signifies a major commitment to enhancing opportunities for women in sports, paralleling other local initiatives aimed at promoting inclusivity and competitiveness across the region. With support from the Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre, the partnership highlights the potential for sport to empower women and foster community connections, paving the way for a vibrant future in women’s rugby in Fiji.
