The Fiji Football Association (Fiji FA) has inaugurated new grassroots goalkeeper training programs at its academies in Ba, Labasa, and Suva, aiming to cultivate young talent within the sport. This initiative is focused on equipping aspiring goalkeepers with the essential technical and tactical skills necessary for advancement in competitive football.

In Ba, the training will be directed by Sanaila Waqanicakau, who serves as Fiji’s national goalkeeper coach and possesses extensive experience in high-level football. In Labasa, the program will be overseen by Shamal Kumar, a former national goalkeeper and Labasa player renowned for his profound knowledge of the game, which is expected to motivate young athletes in the northern region. Additionally, at the Suva Academy, international expertise will be provided by Ricardo Ferrando Gusta, an experienced goalkeeper coach from Spain, who has volunteered to lead the training sessions. His insights into advanced European football techniques will greatly enrich the participants’ learning experience.

This grassroots training program is a crucial part of Fiji FA’s wider strategy to enhance football talent at foundational levels, particularly emphasizing specialized positions such as goalkeeping.
