The Ministry of Health has achieved a significant milestone with the launch of Fiji’s FluTracking initiative at Dinem House in Toorak. This project is part of an international collaboration among health agencies and aims to gather data through online surveys that will track the spread of influenza-like illnesses, COVID-19, and other respiratory infections in Fiji. By doing so, it seeks to provide early warnings for potential outbreaks and monitor trends, especially during pandemics.
Chief Medical Advisor Dr. Luisa Cikamatana highlighted that traditional disease surveillance in Fiji typically relied on data from health facilities, which often delayed outbreak detection until individuals sought medical care. However, she believes the FluTracking project will bridge this gap by fostering community-driven monitoring that can expedite the detection process.
“FluTracking empowers communities to report symptoms directly, allowing for quicker identification of potential outbreaks before they escalate,” Dr. Cikamatana stated. The project will collect valuable data on symptoms and health-seeking behaviors, which will assist public health officials in understanding the transmission of illnesses and the public’s responses, thereby enabling them to implement targeted interventions.
