The Fiji Meteorological Service, in collaboration with the National Disaster Management Office, has initiated efforts to enhance community protection against severe weather events through the Weather Ready Nation Workshop. This four-day event, supported by the U.S. National Weather Service and the U.S. Agency for International Development, is conducted in partnership with the United States’ Hydrologic Research Centre.

The workshop will focus on enhancing impact-based forecasting, strengthening early warning systems, improving inter-agency coordination, and developing risk-informed tools. Of particular concern is urban flood risk in the Lami-Suva corridor, an area increasingly vulnerable to heavy rainfall and rising sea levels. This initiative seeks to ensure Fiji is better prepared for climate-driven disasters, with senior representatives from various government agencies partaking in the event.

This workshop reflects a continued commitment from the Fiji Meteorological Service to improve disaster resilience. It follows recent initiatives including collaborations with Japan for advanced meteorological training facilities and investments into meteorological infrastructure to prepare for climate-related challenges. Furthermore, the inclusion of the Flash Flood Guidance System highlights Fiji’s advanced status in disaster preparedness, serving as a model for other Pacific nations.

These developments are aligned with global efforts and partnerships with entities like the Green Climate Fund and the UN’s proactive stance in ensuring comprehensive early warning systems are globally accessible. Such initiatives are crucial for building community resilience amidst increasing climate-induced adversities. By prioritizing both technical advancements and practical solutions, Fiji solidifies its role as a leader in regional disaster preparedness and climate adaptation.

This proactive approach demonstrates Fiji’s dedication to saving lives, protecting livelihoods, and ensuring a sustainable future for its communities, underscoring the importance of international cooperation and technological innovation in addressing the challenges posed by climate change.
