A three-day futsal coaching course will be held from November 7 to 9 at the Ba Academy Grounds, organized by the Fiji Football Association (Fiji FA) to enhance the skills of district and school-level futsal coaches. The course will be led by Fiji FA coach educator Yogendra Dutt, with the national futsal head coach, José Gerardo, primarily conducting the sessions.
This course aims to emphasize practical play aspects such as defensive and attacking strategies, set plays, goalkeeper training, and coaching techniques for schools, culminating in a hands-on assessment at the end. Coach Gerardo stressed the importance of this initiative, stating, “I have a three-year plan to develop a winning futsal team for Fiji. Programs like this are essential because when coaches improve, players improve, and the entire system benefits.”
Gerardo, who brings over 35 years of international coaching experience, acknowledged the continual growth in Fiji’s futsal scene. He noted, “The standard here is rising steadily. Teams are becoming more organized and technically skilled. I’ve spotted many talented young players with the potential to represent the national team in the future.” He also praised Fiji FA’s efforts to professionalize the sport.
The Fiji FA encourages all district and school futsal coaches to join the program to enhance their coaching skills and technical understanding. The course schedule includes an introductory session on November 7, followed by comprehensive tactical sessions on November 8, and goalkeeper training along with practical assessments on November 9.
This initiative aligns with other recent coaching programs aimed at uplifting coaching standards across Fiji, emphasizing a collective effort to boost the overall quality of football in the region. Such educational advancements mirror the broad commitment to fostering a vibrant sporting culture and hint at a promising future for futsal and football hand in hand in Fiji. The ongoing dedication to improving coaching and player development delights prospects for elevating local talent to national and international platforms.
