A new film visa is set to be introduced, designed to simplify the entry process for international film crews, ultimately enhancing support for the burgeoning screen industry in the country. This initiative is backed by a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that has been signed between the Ministry of Immigration and Film Fiji, which aims to clarify responsibilities and improve coordination regarding visas, permits, and information sharing.

Aliki Salusalu, the Permanent Secretary for Immigration, highlighted that this MoU formalizes a long-standing collaboration between the two agencies, which will help expedite the processing of film productions while safeguarding both border security and the integrity of the immigration system. According to Salusalu, the presence of international film productions contributes significantly to local employment, facilitates skills transfer, and offers global exposure to the nation’s talent.

Jone Robertson, the CEO of Film Fiji, emphasized that the new film visa aligns with the operational realities of international productions, which frequently consist of short-term stays and repeated travels in and out of the country during the course of a single project. He pointed out that the previous visa system was primarily tailored for long-term workers, leading to delays that impacted film crews. The introduction of this new visa aims to provide a more efficient and consistent process that meets the specific needs of the film industry.

Additionally, the new process will enhance data collection as film crews will be required to declare their filming activities as the purpose of their entry. This development will not only aid in tracking production activity but will also facilitate better planning for future projects in the region.

Robertson further stated that the MoU reinforces the partnership between the Ministry of Immigration and Film Fiji, ensuring that the country remains a competitive and welcoming destination for international film productions. This strategic move is a positive step toward fostering a vibrant screen industry while ensuring a seamless experience for foreign filmmakers.
