The inaugural Fiji Family Focus Program has been officially introduced, aimed at bolstering support for overseas workers and their families, highlighting the government’s dedication to a safe and family-centered approach to labor mobility. This initiative is a collaborative effort among Fiji, Australia, and the International Organisation for Migration (IOM).
The program is designed to enhance family readiness, improve financial literacy, and promote social well-being. Employment Minister Agni Deo Singh acknowledged the profound sacrifices made by families when their loved ones seek employment abroad, stating, “Thousands of Fijians leave home each year to create better futures for their families. This program ensures families are equipped with the financial skills, resilience, and support needed to navigate the challenges of separation while maximizing the benefits of overseas employment.”
Singh also emphasized the critical need for families to learn effective budgeting, safeguard against scams, and maintain healthy, violence-free households. He further urged for enhanced measures to protect youth from drug abuse, recognizing the various challenges that overseas employment can bring to families.
Solomon Kantha, Chief of Mission at the IOM, announced that the program will initially roll out as a pilot involving 50 workers and their families. This pilot will include training in emotional resilience, financial planning, and strategies for successful reintegration, which are vital for families impacted by separation due to work.
This initiative marks an important step towards ensuring the well-being of families affected by overseas labor, providing them with the necessary tools and support to thrive both during and after their loved ones’ overseas employment. The focus on education and preparedness signals a positive move towards strengthening family units in the face of the challenges posed by labor mobility.
