Fiji has taken a significant step toward bolstering scientific research and promoting environmental sustainability with the launch of its newest research vessel, ‘Yau Dikevi,’ in Lami. This state-of-the-art vessel represents a substantial investment aimed at enhancing oceanic studies and protecting the island nation’s marine resources.
During the commissioning ceremony, Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka emphasized the vessel’s sophisticated capabilities, stating that it will function as a floating laboratory and a hopeful emblem for the Ministry of Lands and Mineral Resources. Despite its modest size, the vessel is equipped with cutting-edge scientific survey tools designed to perform a range of tasks essential for marine exploration.
The research vessel will enable scientists to undertake marine geology and coastal surveys, map the ocean floor, monitor vulnerable coastal areas affected by climate change, study tectonic activity, and better understand the processes that shape the underwater environment. The data gathered from these activities will not only contribute to the body of global scientific knowledge but also empower Fiji to protect its marine resources for the benefit of future generations.
The vessel’s development was made possible through collaboration between the government and the local shipping industry, particularly Silverstone Pte Ltd. The Prime Minister recognized the hard work of the Ministry of Lands and Mineral Resources in bringing the project to completion and expressed hopes that the Yau Dikevi will fulfill its mission of discovery and teamwork—enhancing Fiji’s stewardship of its marine ecosystem.
After the launch, the RV Yau Dikevi set sail on its inaugural journey to Nukulau, marking the beginning of a promising chapter for scientific exploration in Fiji.
This initiative highlights Fiji’s dedication to preserving its rich marine environment while also contributing to global research efforts, showcasing a proactive approach to environmental stewardship.
