Fiji’s dedication to scientific advancement and environmental stewardship is set to take a significant leap forward with the launch of the cutting-edge research vessel, ‘Yau Dikevi’, which was commissioned in Lami yesterday.
The government views this vessel as a major investment in enhancing oceanic research and safeguarding the country’s marine resources. Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka was on hand to officiate the commissioning, emphasizing the advanced scientific survey tools that equip the vessel.
“This vessel, while modest in size, is outfitted with state-of-the-art technology that enables us to execute vital research tasks,” stated the Prime Minister. He explained that ‘Yau Dikevi’ will function as a floating laboratory and serve as a guiding light for the Ministry of Lands and Mineral Resources.
The research vessel will empower scientists to explore areas such as marine geology and coastal ecosystems, map the ocean floor, pinpoint vulnerable coastal regions to assist communities impacted by climate change, study tectonic movement, and comprehend the dynamics of the underwater environment. These initiatives are aimed at enriching global scientific understanding and bolstering Fiji’s capabilities in protecting its marine heritage for future generations.
Collaboration between the government and local shipping entities, particularly Silverstone Pte Ltd, has been instrumental in making this project a reality. The Prime Minister expressed his gratitude to the staff and management of the Ministry of Lands and Mineral Resources for their efforts in bringing ‘Yau Dikevi’ to the sea.
“May this research vessel sail with purpose, safety, and success, making discoveries, encouraging collaboration, and reinforcing our commitment to responsible management of our marine resources,” he added.
Following the commissioning ceremony, the RV Yau Dikevi set forth on its inaugural journey to Nukulau, marking the beginning of what is expected to be a fruitful endeavor in marine research and conservation.
In summary, the commissioning of the ‘Yau Dikevi’ research vessel underscores Fiji’s proactive stance on environmental sustainability and marine research, signaling hope for future scientific discoveries and collaboration.
