Fiji Launches Cross-Border Tax Crimes Task Force to Strengthen Financial Integrity

The Tax Crimes Task Force in Fiji is set to enhance protections for whistleblowers and improve cross-border investigations into financial misconduct. This new initiative further strengthens financial intelligence gathering while safeguarding taxpayer data.

Taskforce Chair Nitin Gandhi has announced that a recently signed Memorandum of Understanding will bolster coordination, transparency, and compliance among various enforcement and regulatory agencies within Fiji. He underscored the importance of the task force in formalizing a year of cooperation and enabling seamless intelligence sharing to protect the integrity of Fiji’s financial systems.

In his statement, Gandhi expressed gratitude to all partner agencies for their collaboration and insightful contributions to the Memorandum. He noted that their commitment reflects a shared dedication to upholding the rule of law and maintaining the integrity of Fiji’s financial systems. To further empower the task force, new recruitment efforts have been initiated to expand its capabilities.

The task force is also tasked with recommending legislative reforms that will keep Fiji’s tax laws aligned with emerging risks and international standards. It comprises eight key agencies, including the Fiji Revenue and Customs Service (FRCS), Fiji Police, Ministry of Justice, and Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption, among others.

Additionally, Fiji is enhancing its collaboration with the Australian Tax Office and New Zealand Inland Revenue to gain technical expertise and align its practices with global best practices. The support from the Fiji National Provident Fund and the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions will further enhance the task force’s capabilities.

This initiative represents a proactive and strategic move toward safeguarding financial integrity in Fiji. By fostering collaboration among various enforcement agencies and international partners, the Tax Crimes Task Force is well-placed to enhance compliance and establish a fairer and more accountable financial environment in the nation, ultimately benefiting all citizens.
