A newly established database for micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in Fiji is set to transform the way businesses receive support within the country. This centralized, secure platform aims to gather essential data on MSMEs across various sectors, providing a comprehensive overview of the local business landscape like never before.

Finance Minister Esrom Immanuel, who officiated the launch, noted that previous MSME data was scattered across multiple entities, including registration bodies, tax authorities, and financial support programs. This fragmentation hindered effective planning and coordination for business support. The new database rectifies this issue by consolidating vital information while ensuring confidentiality and data protection for all users.

“This initiative will significantly enhance evidence-based policymaking and budgeting,” Immanuel stated, emphasizing that it will allow the government to create better-targeted programs that align with the actual needs of businesses.

Starting January 5, the next year, MSMEs registered in the database will have the opportunity to apply for five critical grant programs through the MSME Portal, accessible at www.msmeportal.gov.fj. The grant programs include the Integrated Human Resource Development Programme, National Export Strategy, Trade Enhancement Programme, Young Entrepreneurship Scheme, and the Northern Development Programme.

The launch of this database marks an important forward step for the MSME sector in Fiji, promising improved support and resources aimed at fostering entrepreneurship and economic growth. This initiative is expected to uplift small businesses, ultimately contributing to a more vibrant and dynamic economy.
