Fiji Launches Campaign to End Diabetes Stigma Among Youth

Diabetes Fiji Inc. has launched a campaign aimed at addressing and eliminating the stigma associated with diabetes, emphasizing that this issue is particularly detrimental for young individuals living with Type 1 Diabetes. The organization highlights that stigma inflicts deep emotional wounds, as many youths carry the burden of negative judgments and a lack of understanding from those around them.

According to Project Manager Kini Marawa, numerous young Fijians can recall painful remarks instead of uplifting support when dealing with their condition. Many have experienced judgmental gazes while monitoring their blood glucose levels or have faced accusatory comments that suggest their lifestyle choices are to blame for their diabetes. These encounters often lead to a profound sense of silence, shame, and fear regarding their health.

The roots of this stigma are typically found in widespread misconceptions. For instance, a common misconception is that Type 1 Diabetes results from excessive sugar consumption, despite it being a medical condition that cannot be prevented by lifestyle changes. Mr. Marawa shared the story of a young woman who concealed her diabetes during her childhood due to the fear of being judged. This intimidation led her to neglect her health during her teenage years, a challenge mirrored by many others across Fiji.

The consequences of such stigma are severe; feeling judged about their condition can prompt individuals to avoid routine glucose checks, skip necessary clinic appointments, or hesitate to administer insulin publicly. This not only impacts mental well-being but also fosters isolation and prevents access to proper care.

To counteract this stigma, Diabetes Fiji Inc. is implementing the Young Diabetes Fiji program, which aims to transform community attitudes towards diabetes. This initiative emphasizes peer support, youth leadership, mental health awareness, and family engagement, along with fostering knowledge in schools, villages, settlements, churches, and workplaces. The overarching goal is to cultivate an environment where young people receive support rather than condemnation.

The organization encourages individuals of all ages living with diabetes to utilize its services, which include resources accessible through its headquarters, community screenings, social media platforms, youth programs, and peer support networks. Additionally, Diabetes Fiji Inc. calls for public participation in discussing their personal experiences with diabetes stigma. By fostering open conversations, the organization aims to create a more compassionate and understanding community.

Through collective efforts, Diabetes Fiji Inc. believes that Fiji can dismantle the silence surrounding diabetes and eradicate stigma once and for all. This initiative not only highlights the importance of understanding and support but also strives to empower those affected, paving the way for a healthier and more inclusive society.
