All Fijians are set to benefit from lower bus fares starting in August 2025, thanks to a new government subsidy introduced in the 2025–2026 National Budget. Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister, Professor Biman Prasad, announced that a 10 percent subsidy will be implemented from August 2025 to July 2026, costing the government approximately $10 million. This means bus passengers will see a 10 percent reduction in fares, while bus companies will continue receiving the full fare, with the government covering the difference.
This initiative aims to provide financial relief for families and to encourage greater use of public transport. Additionally, students will continue to enjoy free travel to school with blue cards, while a 50 percent travel subsidy for other students will remain in effect. The overall budget for student transport assistance has been raised to $50 million, with the $200 Back-to-School Assistance continuing in January 2026, totaling a significant allocation of $40 million.
These measures reflect the coalition government’s ongoing commitment to enhance accessibility to education and to support families.
Notably, previous discussions led by the Fiji Bus Operators Association (FBOA) highlighted the importance of government support in subsidizing student bus fares, underlining the role of bus operators over the past fifty years in offsetting costs for students. Richard Lal, President of FBOA, expressed gratitude for the government’s feedback and noted the urgent need for assistance due to rising operational costs faced by the bus industry.
This budgetary initiative is an encouraging step towards alleviating transportation expenses for Fiji’s residents and reinforcing support for the essential services provided by the bus sector.
