Fiji has officially launched its national programme in celebration of the inaugural World Rural Development Day, drawing attention to the significance of amplifying rural voices while promoting sustainable development across remote communities. The event took place in Vunuku Village, Rewa, where Minister for Rural and Maritime Development, Sakiasi Ditoka, emphasized the global relevance of July 6, recognized by the United Nations through Resolution A/78/326.
Mr. Ditoka described the day not only as a celebration but also as a “call to action,” reaffirming Fiji’s commitment to fostering resilient, self-reliant rural communities. The Ministry has planned a four-day program themed “Elevating Rural Voices: Advancing Development, Reducing Poverty, and Enhancing Well-being,” which aims to engage various stakeholders and highlight the challenges faced in rural development.
Key activities in the programme include national radio and TV talk-back shows, district displays of development programs, and newspaper features that showcase the Ministry’s efforts. As part of the event, Ditoka announced the commissioning of a new community ablution block, valued at $31,400, which is fully funded by the government. He stressed the importance of clean water and sanitation as basic rights, urging residents to maintain this new facility responsibly.
Significant investment announcements were also made, including a crab fattening project funded by JICA and solar lighting initiatives by Habitat for Humanity, among others. The Minister highlighted the ongoing importance of various developmental programs such as the Self-Help Programme (SHP), Seafaring Entrepreneurial Assistance (SEA), and the Rural Housing Assistance (RHA) initiatives, all of which will continue under the proposed new fiscal year budget.
This initiative comes at a crucial time, aligning with broader government efforts to enhance rural infrastructure and economic opportunities. Previous announcements from the government indicate a keen focus on bridging the development gap between urban and rural areas, aiming not only to improve access to essential services but also to harness the potential of rural communities for national growth.
Overall, this national programme symbolizes a collective commitment towards a more sustainable and inclusive future for Fiji’s rural populations, with encouraging prospects for empowering these communities through active engagement and development initiatives.
