The Ministry of Health has established a significant new partnership with the GX Foundation, embracing the Belt and Road Initiative to commence the “National Dengue Fever and Other Vector-Borne Disease Control Program in Fiji 2025-2027.” This collaboration involves a substantial donation of mosquito control equipment and supplies, estimated at approximately $2 million, which enhances the country’s public health initiatives.
The program, currently entering a crucial pilot phase, is focused on deploying essential equipment to key locations pivotal for disease surveillance and control. This includes the CWM Hospital, Nausori and Nadi Airports, Suva and Nadi Markets, and Nadi Hospital—all vital in the fight against vector-borne diseases.
Notably, this initial support is already aiding health teams in managing mosquito and fly populations, the primary carriers of dengue and other related illnesses. With a formal Memorandum of Understanding finalized, both the Ministry and the GX Foundation are preparing for a nationwide rollout of the initiative.
In addition to enhancing health facilities and ports of entry, including smaller airports in Vanua Levu and various communities across Fiji, the program will also implement public awareness campaigns aimed at educating citizens on prevention strategies. This collaborative effort underscores a mutual dedication to fostering a healthier and safer nation for all.
The public is encouraged to support these proactive measures by eliminating standing water, utilizing repellents, and ensuring clean environments to reduce the risks associated with dengue transmission.
